Frequently Asked Questions & Answers
How do I start Project Zephyr in my school/university?
We’ve worked hard to make the implementation process as easy as possible. We’ve achieved this because our product will be tailored to your facilities and goals.
1. You start by contacting us, letting us know you want to start Project Zephyr.
2. We ask you questions about what you want to achieve out of PZ, and what facilities and staff you have.
3. Based on your feedback we assemble the product and ship it to you with your member log-in
4. You receive a package with everything you need to start and sustain Project Zephyr; your member log-in will contain all the teaching materials for students and staff as well as full instructions and guidelines.
Do I need any specialised staff?
As long your staff teaching Project Zephyr have enough knowledge and experience to safely utilise the tools you wish to use to build your car, then no. We provide all the training materials needed.
Do I need any specialised tools?
You can build a Project Zephyr car with nothing more than basic hand tools (Screwdrivers, Allen keys, wrenches, hacksaws etc.), a drill, and a jigsaw.
If, however, you want to use a metal 3D printer or a sophisticated 5-axis CNC mill, nothing is stopping you from doing that either. You are bound only by your imagination.
How long does it take to build a car?
The creative process varies both on the complexity of your design, but also on the experience and age of your students. It can take as little as 3 months to as long as 9 or more (At 3h of work an academic week).
Can I drive my vehicle on the road?
Project Zephyr was designed as an educational experience not a road vehicle. As such it does not come with street-car typical safety equipment (Airbags, sophisticated crumple zones etc). We do not advise you take this on the road for your own safety. The vehicle is very low and other drivers may not see you amongst other road-dangers. Furthermore it may be illegal. Your vehicle will need to be registered with the appropriate authority and this is a lengthy, sometimes expensive process. It also depends on whether your local laws allow you to register your vehicle. There may be conditions such as adding signaling lights, or minimum speed limits that vary from region to region. Please check with your local vehicle registration agency and law enforcement if you wish to go down that road.
Can I reuse Project Zephyr
Absolutely. We’ve made everything as environmentally friendly as possible from the box it arrives in to the batteries. If you take care of your stock components, and carefully disassemble a car once it’s finished it’s use, we don’t see why some components couldn’t last half a decade or more. At least 65% can be reused this way. The rest is 90% recyclable or biodegradable.
